This is a high quality, Maker marked, Antique sterling silver top pocket Whiskey flask, with a 3-dimensional hand blown cross hatched pattern cut crystal bottle, a hallmarked mushroom shaped sterling top with presentation initial S hand engraved on the slightly domed round that that acts as an escutcheon plate. This piece has two Hallmark markings: The Maker Mark “A.K.” above an “S”. The hallmarks on the neck are clear. At first glance, this piece appears to be American made. It is high quality and does not have the typical English hall marks. However, I can find no American maker with this hallmark, but did find this hallmark for a London maker named Agustus Kohler, in business from 1884 – 1892. The “S” mark is the London date mark for 1893, both the maker and date mark are correct for this late Victorian flask. Some English flasks will have only a date mark and duty mark, a maker mark and sterling mark, a Maker mark and date mark, or some similar set of hallmarks that were mostly used for domestic use and did not require a full set of export hallmarks. This is a heavy duty, thick piece of hand-blown cut crystal, 5 ¾” tall x 3 5/8” wide x 1 1/16” thick and is heavy for its size at a hefty 10.2 ounces   292 grams. This flask is a large size pocket flask size; 5 1/8" tall x 2 5/8" wide x 1 1/4" thick and is intended as a carrying flask and could also be used as a jacket pocket flask. The oval shaped hand cut crystal glass is hand blown into a mold, is remarkably clear. Both the front and back panels have a beveled cross hatch pattern with a border. The top and sides are hand cut into the crystal to create an eye appealing diamond patterns with half diamond borders. The thick cut crystal combined with the heft of a silver top and cup, make this piece heavy for its size at 10.5 ounces or 299 grams. There is no flat bottom that would allow the flask to stand upright. The mushroom shaped domed silver screw cap has a neck that flares from the base towards the top, with no dings or dents with a cork insert. It is Maker marked and date marked but is not stamped as to the silver content. The quality screw cap is heavy for its size, has the color of silver, has no base metal showing through the top engraving, and appears to be silver, which would be proper for this period late Victorian quality flask. The screw top secures the top to the bottle securely and appears it would hold liquid if used; but I have not tested it as the glass is clear. This handsome, hand blown, and hand cut crystal flask is clear, was hand crafted by Artisans.  Most flasks with this type of screw top date from the late 1800's through the early 1900s.This silver has a light patina, and the flask demonstrates little use overall. This would be great for any Whiskey or Spirits, gambling, or flask collection; and could still be used by any gentleman, sportsman, hunter, outdoors man, or sports fan; or use as a gift, decorator piece in any Man cave, office, or den.
