I've been using the SmartHBA and it's awesome.  It's a great deal for a SAS3 HBA, the RAID feature gives it nice flexibility for certain applications, and it's fast.  It really can do RAID + HBA on same card simultaneously! Also, the command line tools and drivers work great.
100% compatible with every OS I've tried it with.
PRO TIP:
If you'd rather use the 4 external ports inside the same computer, just get a short SFF-8644 to SFF-8644 or SFF-8044 cable and run them back into the machine using an SFF-8087 converter - see last 2 photos for details
