Awesome Victorian era horse hoof and horseshoe inkwell/encrier. Both rare and unique, this curiosity dates back to the 1880s. This genuine horse hoof has been turned into a desktop inkwell and pen stand, complete with a horseshoe and the original
Weiner Silber
silver inkwell. The inkwell is marked with Weiner Silber
'
s shamrock/four-leaf clover silver hallmark or maker
'
s mark. The top of the inkstand remains covered in the original red velvet material held in place by the original upholstery tacks.
This use of taxidermy used as decor was made popular during the Victorian era and few examples still survive. During this time, it was a common
practice
for gentlemen and gentlewomen to transform their beloved horse
'
s hoof into an inkstand. This was a simple way to remember their beloved companion. This antique inkstand is
beautiful and still very usable with the inkwell still fully intact. A truly remarkable find, this Victorian horse hoof inkstand is sure to make the perfect centerpiece or conversation piece in any setting.
